Man, I hate that. I've read more than a few books where a sympathetic character got the axe in a way that I felt was unnecessary.
This seemed even odder than just killing off a sympathetic character. This was one of the main protagonists through two previous books, and was one of four main characters. And she is (was, it's been cancelled I think) a main character in a TV series based on the books.
