And I can so believe that "Tree Butcher" story, having witnessed first hand the idiocy people will display when they can seize the upper hand.

Yeah, I lived in Santa Cruz for many years. People there truly think they have the right to tell you what you can do with your property.
And on the subject of trees, they usually have not idea what the concept of "taproot" means (more accurately, they have not idea why the fact that redwoods don't have taproots makes them fundamentally different from all other trees).
