That Big Band Sound

Gads, how I love it. Y'all know that I am a Rock and Rollster, and a fan of Country/Western. But I also have a MAJOR weakness for the Big Band Sound, especially Glenn Miller.

Here is The Glenn Miller Orchestra with their greatest single piece:

GAWD how I love that piece. And this one:

And here is Glenn Miller with the Sainted Dorothy Dandridge and the Sainted Nicholas Brothers. Oh man, just dig it:

And bless his little pea pickin' heart, I love how Brian Setzer has taken up the furtherance of Big Band (embedding disabled, dammit). I just kinda wish he'd put on a shirt while doing so. Tattoos are really out of place here.

Embedding is also disabled on this one by the Sainted Andrews Sisters. Fortunately, this one (of the same bit from the movie "Buck Privates") is embeddable. Be still my heart:

Also embeddable is this great version of BWBB:

One of the few things my parents agreed on was Big Band music, so I was blessed to grow up with an appreciation for Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw. I actually saw Goodman perform when I was in high school. Amazing.
I know a lot of people loathe Barry Manilow, but if you ever have a chance to hear his Singing With The Big Bands CD, it's worth a listen. He pulled together a lot of the old bands and recorded some amazing tracks with them.
Damn, Ken, now I'm going to have to pull out my Direct-to-Disc phonograph record of the Glenn Miller Orchestra and listen to it again!

You actually got to see Benny Goodman? Oh man.

Good stuff. Love this kind of music, despite (or maybe because of) the way a lot of others 30 & under think liking it makes me a nerd.

My beloved spouse likes it, too.

I always had an appreciation for big band. It's just good music. There was a great swing revival in the mid-to-late '90s that just did not last long enough.

We had big band music at both my HS proms. I thought everbody did until I got to college and heard people talking about "DJs" and "cover bands."

I've always thought it vaguely ridiculous that you're supposed to dance modernly (is that a word?) when you're dressed in formal wear.

I loves me the swing and jump jazz. It's also nice to know that Brian Setzer still has it. I bought "13" and it was not so good - as in, unlistenable in spots. He's got to stick with the Orchestra.

(word verify - "duyouckp" - well, do ya, punk?)

Now this is music I dig.

I had never seen the one with Miss Dandridge and the Nicholas Brothers. (I never fail to be amazed at the sheer athleticism that those men had - those were some incredible moves).

I love Big Band, too. I guess there are a lot of us out here, who aren't in the "right" chronological group to love it, but still do.

Aren't they great?

Truth be told, even though hip hop and whatnot are not my thing, I get impressed with the same kind of athleticism and skill in a lot of break dancers.

And realistically, no one hanging around this place is in the "right" chronological group, but swing and jazz really cut across generations.
